Character Chat: Coffee with Lottie Lemon

Hey all! It’s me, Lottie Lemon, here from the Cutie Pie Bakery and Cakery. It’s so warm out today in Honey Hollow, I’m taking a quick break from the bakery along with my sister Meg and we’re sitting out on the bistro tables in front of my shop.

Meg is a bit of a character. She dyes her blonde locks black, has enough dark kohl ringed around her eyes to make the racoons envious, and is wearing some sort of pleather contraption that I’m not sure how she got on or how she’ll get it off. Meg left Vermont once to be a part of the wrestling circuit out in Las Vegas, but she’s back now, pulling double duty at the Honey Pot Diner and working at some dicey club out in Leeds.

“All right, Lot.” She takes a sip from her coffee. “Tell me your secret—how is it you keep getting away with murder?”

I can’t help but roll my eyes at that one. “I’m not killing anyone and you know it.”

“Sure you are.” She chuckles. “You’ve found one body a month for the last two years. The laws of probability suggest a homicidal maniac is afoot in Honey Hollow—and that maniac would be you.”

“Meg.” I cringe as I give a quick glance around. “You know very well that the only thing I have to do with those cases is helping to solve them.”

“Sure you do.” She offers up an exaggerated wink. “And never mind. I already know your secret. You’ve got a top notch judge and a homicide detective in your back pocket—among other creative places.”

“Stop.” I lift my mug to her as if I was making a toast. “Here’s to me never finding another dead body again. In fact, I’d like to pass the homicidal baton to you. Tag—you’re it. I wish you good luck with your future investigations.”

“I’m not investigating a thing and we both know it,” she's quick to counter. “I’m sorry, Lottie, but you’re bound to trip over another cadaver in the very near future. It’s the way of the world. Settle in. Something tells me it’s going to be a long, hot summer. I’m betting the universe has a few surprises in store for you—and some of them will just so happen to be dead.”

“That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.”
